Virtual Studio Visit and Critique
By Richard Malinsky, arts editor
The Studio Visit (TSV) is a web journal of artist interviews, curated by a dedicated team and contributors focused on contemporary visual artists and their individual processes. TSV is based in Washington, D.C., and recently expanded its presence to Berlin, Germany. Many of the artists featured are from these geographic regions, but their goal is to continue to expand featured artists to represent all areas of the globe.
What makes this site unique is that the interviews are conducted in the artists’ actual studios. They are presented either in video format or through still photography with a transcript. Being able to see (and hear) artists respond within the space of their work facilitates a greater understanding and appreciation of the artistic process as well as of the art itself.
This up-close-and-personal approach allows for greater insight into inspirational stimuli and how various artists approach the creative process. An example: In Sue Wrbican’s interview, she discusses the process of creating her sculpture The Eventual Outcome of an Instant. She explains that there was “an outgrowth of the work [she] was doing with the hurricanes and sails and subsequently led [her] to the work of Kay Sage, a Surrealist painter.”
The site is organized well and easy to navigate. Interviews are categorized by artist name, by medium, and by region.
Of particular interest is a new section, “Art Critique Series,” offering professional artists public critiques. The format is modeled on graduate program art critiquing sessions, where artists are invited to present their work to an audience composed of TSV team members and a guest moderator. Artists can submit a request to be chosen as well as nominations from the audience and TSV team members.
All-in-all, I recommend this site for its variety of artists, art styles, and varied processes of today’s art scene.
